Matt Andrews, 63, of Archer City, died on Sunday after a brief stay at the Hospice of Wichita Falls.
Matt’s family has deep roots in Archer County, and he took great pride in his ranching heritage.
Matt Donnell Andrews was born February 8, 1963, in Olney, to Arch Andrews and Louise (Stowe) Andrews. He was raised in Archer City, and graduated from Archer City High School. He received degrees in history from Texas A&M University and from Stephen F. Austin State University, and later received an MBA from UT Arlington. He pursued a career in social service, working for several years for the Juvenile Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and as a patient advocate for Pecan Valley MHMR.
As his parents grew older, he felt called to return to Archer City to care for them. In Archer City, he met Melonie Wheeler, an old acquaintance from his high school days who had also returned to Archer City to care for her aging parents. They married in 2020, and formed a very close, loving, and supportive relationship. Matt was adopted into the Wheeler clan, and was a valued and well-loved member of their family.
Matt is survived by his wife, Melonie, of Archer City; his mother, Louise, also of Archer City, his brother, Will, and his wife, Elana, of Austin; and his niece, Vada, of Ithaca, New York. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lillian Wheeler, of Archer City; two sisters-in-law, Kimbra York and her husband Dan, of Archer City, and Sherry Smajstrla and her husband John, of Seymour; and nieces and nephews Melissa and Stanley Williams, Kelce and Justin Tipton, Hunter and Bethany York, Jaxson Smith, and Dylan and Caroline Williams. Matt was preceded in death by his father, Arch Andrews, and his father-in-law, Perry Wheeler.
Matt’s father was a veterinarian, and there were always animals around as he was growing up, including a long succession of Border Collies and housecats. Matt and Melonie have continued that tradition with their Border Collie, Luke, and their cat, Amos, who will miss him.
Matt shared his father’s love for the Texas Aggies football team, a source of pride, hope, and not infrequent frustration. Also like his father, he enjoyed reading Texas history and the history of ranching in Texas. And since his father’s death in 2022, Matt has worked closely with ranch foreman J.D. Morrison to continue the family ranching operation.
Funeral services for Matt will be held Friday, February 27, at 10:00 am at First Baptist Church of Archer City, with C.J. Frazier, Pastor of First Baptist Church, and Roger Deerinwater officiating. Interment will be in the Archer City Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City.
Memorials may be made to the Archer City Volunteer Fire Department at PO Box 367, Archer City, Texas 76351.
