Leon Joseph Veitenheimer, age 90, of Bedford, Texas, formerly of Burkburnett, Texas, passed away Monday, September 10, 2018, at his residence.
Vigil service and rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2018, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Windthorst. Mass will be concelebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 15, 2018, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Michael Moloney and Father Michael Holmberg officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City.
Leon was born August 30, 1928, to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Humpert Veitenheimer in Windthorst where he was raised.
He was married to the love of his life for sixty-five years, Mary Louise Decker, on November 26, 1952 in Pep, Texas.
During the Korean War, Leon proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his tour of duty, he worked for Berend Bros. Farm and Garden for forty-two years, retiring as manager of the Burkburnett store in 1992.
Leon was a lifelong Catholic, a founding member of the St. Jude Knights of Columbus in Burkburnett, and served as their Grand Knight and in several other offices. He enjoyed square dancing, calling bingo and cooking for the Knights of Columbus events. He was an avid fan of the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Cowboys. Above all, he loved his wife, children and extended family, and he served his Lord well.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise of Bedford; two daughters, Janice Marie Grau and husband, Rick of Hixson, Tennessee and Mary Lynette Scheuing and husband, Matt of Clyde Hill, Washington; four sons, Ronald Leon Veitenheimer and wife, Denise of Bedford, Michael Joseph Veitenheimer and wife, Christy of Coppell, James Raymond Veitenheimer and wife, Denise of Grapevine, and Mark Allen Veitenheimer and wife, Kristi of Windthorst; one brother, Ed Veitenheimer of Amarillo; five sisters, Caroline Anderle and husband, Leroy of Lake Arrowhead, Francie Scheffe of Amarillo, Cordella Berend and husband, Alfred Jr. of Windthorst, Adelaide Lentz and husband, Fred of Wichita Falls, and Betty Jo Waters and husband, David of Lake Jackson, Texas; fourteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by grandson, Bryan Veitenheimer; brother, Al Veitenheimer; brother-in-law, Hank Scheffe; and sister-in-law, Alvina Veitenheimer.
