Jerome Berend, age 87, of Windthorst, Texas passed away Tuesday afternoon, December 1, 2015, in Hospice of Wichita Falls.
A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December3, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Windthorst. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Moloney, O.F.S. Parochial Administrator of St. Mary's and St. Boniface Catholic Church, and Deacon Don Brown officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City.
Jerome was born August 17, 1928 in Windthorst, Texas to the late Anton Albert Berend and Eleanor R. Wachsmann Berend.
He and Bernadine Hemmi were married October 26, 1949 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Scotland, Texas.
Jerome was a builder from 1951 until his death. He also farmed and raised cattle. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing dominoes and sheephead games.
Jerome was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Windthorst Knight of Columbus, and served on the original Board of Directors of Windthorst Credit Union.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-six years, Bernadine of the home; four sons, Larry and wife, Carol of Windthorst, Gerald and wife, Sherry of Windthorst, Vincent and wife, Rena of Nassau Bay, Texas, Ronald and Tonya of Windthorst; one daughter, Mary Ann Blagg and husband, David of Scotland; five brothers, Harold Berend of Marienthal, Kansas, Martin Berend of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Anton Berend of Tulsa, Oklahoma, James Berend of Windthorst, and George Wray of San Antonio; four sisters, Alma Pennartz, Mildred Pennartz, and Margaret Schroeder, all of Windthorst, and Eleanor Pechacek of Las Vegas, Nevada; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Roy Dean Berend on April 17, 2005, and two brothers, Manuel and Emery Berend.
Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Austin, Avery and Awtry Blagg, Andrew, Blaine, Craig, David, Daryl, Doug, and Randy Berend.
