Janet was born in Nashua, New Hampshire on September 7, 1938, a daughter of the late Gardner & R. Athalie (Henry) Smith.

Raised in Hudson, New Hampshire, she was a 1956 graduate of Alvirne High School where she was salutatorian.  Janet's junior year of High School, she was honored with being nominated for and attending New Hampshire's Girl's State program for students who show leadership qualities.

Through an employment transfer she and her young family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas in 1968 and then to Vernon in 1973.

In 1983 she married Ralph Gilbert and moved to Electra.  Together, they owned and operated Ralph's and Expressway Service Stations in Punkin Center and Electra.

After raising her family she attended VRJC where she was on the Dean's academic honor roll every semester. She also enjoyed serving several years as the Wichita Falls DAR chapter's treasurer.  Janet had a lifelong hobby and passion for genealogy and for researching her family's history.  This hobby led to her traveling to libraries in her home state, and even to Salt Lake City, Utah to the Division of Archives and Records Service.  She enjoyed her church life and also the civic duties as a twenty-five year member of the board of directors for the Electra Memorial Hospital.  Janet spent the majority of her life embracing her friends and family of the Punkin Center and Electra communities.  She always made sure holidays were special by hosting large gatherings at her and Ralph's house for both Christmas Eve and Easter, with the majority of the family attending.

Janet is survived by her husband, Ralph of Electra; six children, Joni Latour Schatte and husband, Chris of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, Deanna Latour Rainwater and husband, Joe Tom and Vincent Latour and wife, Dawn, all of Vernon, Shawn Thaggard, Steven Gilbert and wife, Kim and Chad Gilbert and wife, Sherry, all of Electra; twenty grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was also preceded in death by her younger siblings, Gordon and Evelyn.

Ralph and their granddaughter, Brittany, gave Janet the loving care that she needed to be able to stay in their home through the last several years.
