One year after the bombing of Pearl Harbor Don chose to leave his job on the Muleshoe Ranch to join the U.S. Army in December 1942. He was part of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment. The Purple Heart and Bronze Star were among the several honors he received.

He worked for the Muleshoe Ranch, which later became Medders and then Williamsons, until his retirement.
Even after his retirement Don maintained his love for ranching with a small herd of cattle. When not working he enjoyed reading, playing 42 and visiting with friends and family.
