Billie was born February 9, 1938 to the late William Ray Schlabs and Mary Ann Baumhardt Schlabs in Wichita Falls, Texas and raised in Scotland. She was named after her Dad as she was a “Daddy’s Girl” and grew up in his garage working on projects.
She graduated a year early in 1955 from the Academy of Immaculate Mary in Wichita Falls and had a scholarship to attend college. Instead she chose, to marry a handsome young man she met at a Windthorst baseball game. She married Ernie Hoff on November 9, 1955 in Scotland, Texas. He preceded her in death on August 30, 2025.
Billie moved from the city life of Scotland to a two room house in Windthorst close to the dairy. This house had no indoor bathroom. She would make Ernie wake up in the middle of the night to walk her to the outhouse. He quickly built her the house they resided in for sixty-five years.
Billie began her working life as a secretary at Berend Brothers when the boys were all in school. When Terry started school, she began working as a teacher’s aide in the Special Ed Department at Windthorst ISD. A career that spanned thirty-five years, she developed many life-long friends in the teacher’s lounge and would bring her famous baked goods often. Billie taught Religion Class many years and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America for sixty plus years. She also was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She and Ernie would host the Annual 4Th Degree Knights of Columbus trips providing fun games along the way. They also worked the Windthorst Dances.
Billie and Ernie enjoyed annual fishing trips to Port Aransas with family and friends. They also enjoyed trips to Ruidoso, New Mexico and to the casino. But they were happiest driving the Scaling Leases looking at the wildlife. Her biggest joy was always her family and was happiest rocking one of the babies. She always made birthdays and Christmas special and enjoyed celebrating with her birthday buddy, Brady Herndon.
