Bernard Henry Hilbers, age 87, lifelong resident of Scotland, Texas passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021 in Wichita Falls.
Due to Covid, the family suggests only immediate family and close friends attend this service and masks are required. Vigil service and rosary followed by Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2021, with Rev. Michael Moloney, Pastor of St. Mary's and St. Boniface Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Boniface Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City.
Bernard was born August 5, 1933 to the late Henry William Hilbers and Frances Vieth Hilbers in Archer County.
During the Korean War, Bernard proudly served his county in the United States Army. After his tour of duty, he returned to Scotland.
He and Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Coufal were married on January 19, 1968 in Scotland, Texas.
Bernard was a dairy farmer and rancher throughout his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a director of the JAC for twenty years. Her served on the Catholic Life Board, the Scotland Senior Citizens Board and the Scotland Cemetery Board and was responsible for marking the graves.
Bernard loved to play dominoes, fishing and riding around checking his land. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing his vegetable, eggs and pecans with his neighbors. He traveled to all countries throughout the world and learned to really appreciate his own country.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Jane Hilbers of Scotland; daughter, Anna Hilbers Berend and husband, Terry of Scotland; daughter-in-law, Veda Hilbers of Seymour; sister, Bernice Hoegger of Scotland; brother, Albert Hilbers of Scotland; and six grandchildren, Marlena, Chelsea, Braden, Hayden, A.J. and Matthew.
Bernard was also preceded in death by his son, Steven Hilbers; grandsons, Brandon Hilbers and Landon Berend; sisters, Marie Teichman and Dorothy McDonald.
The family suggests memorial to the Scotland Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box, Scotland, Texas 76379 or to the St. Boniface Cemetery, P.O. Box 230, Windthorst, Texas 76389.
